URJ PRESS Releases Second Edition of Classic Text Book A revised and updated edition of one of the Reform Movement's most widely used textbooks is now available from the URJ PRESS. Intended to help a new generation appreciate the many important roles t'filah can play in their daily lives, B'chol L'vavcha has been published with new commentary, an updated text that reflects current Reform practice, new illustrations, and new perspectives on teaching liturgy. First published in 1975, B'chol L'vavcha, edited by Rabbi Harvey J. Fields, combines the traditional Jewish prayers-including morning blessings, the sh'ma, the Amidah, the prayers for the reading of Torah, and concluding prayers-study questions, and commentary. "The purpose of B'chol L'vavcha is to help us appreciate the development and artistry of Jewish prayer as well as the significant role it has played in the history and experience of the Jewish people," writes Fields. "We wanted this book to involve the student in a creative exploration of the meaning of Jewish prayer." The new edition, revised by Elaine Rose Glickman with Harvey J. Fields, again seeks to broaden the prayer experience, but augments the prayers with new passages by authors including Yehuda Amichai, Marcia Falk, Debbie Friedman, Nachman of Breslov, Rami Shapiro, Hannah Senesh, and Danny Siegel. The words of these writers "are meant to enlarge our understanding of the various ways in which Jews have interpreted and applied our ancient prayers to their joys and disappointments, to their fears and triumphs," Fields writes. The book also contains guidelines on writing creative prayers, and sections on the wearing of the tallit, the kippah, and tefillin. B'chol L'vavcha can be used by a number of groups within the synagogue. Although the commentary was written for religious school students in fourth through seventh grades, it can be adapted for high school students and adults, making it an ideal resource for adult bar/bat mitzvah programs. Older students can use it to celebrate Shabbat morning, and it can also be used as part of an adult education program, part of a high school curriculum, and in retreats, conclaves, and summer camp programs. Writes Fields, "We hope that it will lead to questions, investigation, discussion, research, debate, and creativity - and that its results will be enjoyable, exciting, and inspiring." B'chol L'vavcha can be ordered through the URJ PRESS Web site, or by contacting the Press toll-free at (888) 489-UAHC. ### The URJ PRESS is the publications division of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, the synagogue arm of the Reform Movement in North America. The UAHC represents more than 1.5 million Reform Jews in 900 synagogues across the United States and Canada. UAHC programs include youth camping, outreach to intermarried and unaffiliated Jews, adult education programs, and the Religious Action Center in Washington, DC.
