URJ PRESS SHIPS GIFT OF 50,000 BOOKS TO
JEWISH EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS

The Union for Reform Judaism today announced plans to donate a library of Jewish books to more than 280 Reform early childhood programs in the United States and Canada. Each school will receive over 150 books.

Rabbi Jan Katzew, director of the Union's Department of Lifelong Jewish Learning, said the collection of educational material is "an expression of appreciation for bringing the richness of Judaism into the lives of this generation and generations to come." Rabbi Hara Person, editor in chief of URJ Press, encouraged schools to use and share the books with teachers, students, parents, and grandparents.

The collection includes teaching guides, textbooks, activity books, pictures books, and board books on topics including the celebration of Shabbat and major holidays, Jewish life around the world, and the wisdom of Jewish texts. "We look forward to continuing to develop new materials for our youngest members to use in the schools of the Reform movement," Person said. "We hope that this gift helps kick off a wonderful new school year."

As the book publishing arm of the Union for Reform Judaism, URJ Press is a leading creator of Jewish educational material, specializing in early childhood curricula, religious school textbooks, resources for adult education, Hebrew language training, and synagogue management guides. The CHAI: Learning for Jewish Life curriculum and Mitkadem: Hebrew for Youth program, which were launched less than five years ago, are now used in scores of classrooms throughout North America, and day schools are currently using the Chaverim B'Ivrit: Friends in Hebrew curriculum. The URJ Press is also the publisher of the acclaimed revised edition of The Torah: A Modern Commentary, and produces print music, songbooks, and CDs through its music division, Transcontinental Music Publications.
