URJ PRESS Has Chanukah Gifts for All Ages

Just in time for Chanukah giftgiving, the URJ PRESS is releasing new books and recordings that will please Jews of all ages. The Press also has timeless children's books and classic texts that make wonderful reading throughout the year.

"With Chanukah approaching, we encourage the Jewish community to turn to our catalog for materials that teach Jewish values and traditions," said Kenneth Gesser, URJ PRESS publisher. "This festival is a wonderful opportunity for adults and children alike to deepen their commitment to Judaism-and sometimes just the right passage in a book or a fragment of a song is enough to open a door for someone who's seeking to learn."

Children's Books

For the youngest members of the family, the URJ PRESS has books about Chanukah and Jewish life in general that will be appreciated all year long.

Preschoolers will enjoy Camille Kress's colorful board books Let There Be Lights! and Tot Shabbat, as well as Martin Lemelman'sChanukah Is... and The Jewish Holiday Book.

Parents who want more challenging read-along books for children in the K-3 grades will want to consider giving The Eight Nights: A Chanukah Counting Book by Jane Bearman, Fun with Jewish Holiday Rhymes by Sylvia A. Rouss and Lisa Steinberg, and The Little Menorah Who Forgot Chanukah, with story, music, and read-along cassette by Jerry Sperling.

For older children, Drawing Your Way through the Jewish Holidays written and illustrated by Eleanor Schick offers a do-it-yourself art lesson, while Volumes 1 and 2 of Seymour Rossel's Sefer Ha-Agaddah: The Book of Legends for Young People introduce youngsters to the rich world of Jewish lore. The Book of Miracles: A Young Person's Guide to Jewish Spirituality by Lawrence Kushner masterfully leads children into dialogue with sacred texts.?

Social Justice in Print and Sound

Jewish Dimensions of Social Justice: Tough Moral Choices of Our Time is the eagerly awaited successor to the 1992 volume Tough Choices by the country's undisputed authorities on religious action and social justice, Rabbi David Saperstein, director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, and Albert Vorspan, the former director of the Commission on Social Action.

Sing Out for Justice: An Album of Contemporary and Traditional Social Justice Songs will provide welcome relief from the music broadcast over the airwaves during the holiday season. Available in compact disk and audiocassette, the recording captures Peter Yarrow, Debbie Friedman, and other artists in concert at the UAHC's 1997 Dallas Biennial and in the studio. (Proceeds from the album benefit the Religious Action Center in Washington, DC.)

Books for All Seasons

A new work that's destined to be used for generations is A Shabbat Reader: Universe of Cosmic Joy, a compilation of essays, poems, prayers, scholarly discussions, and poignant remembrances by leading authors from all of Judaism's major movements. A Shabbat Reader is edited by Dov Peretz Elkins and can be used by individuals as well as adult study groups.

On the same subject, Ruth Perelson's An Invitation to Shabbat: A Beginner's Guide to Weekly Celebration, released recently, offers beginners a practical and thorough guide to celebrating the Sabbath and includes a compact disk with prayers sung by cantors and other professional singers.

Major Jewish texts are also timeless and appropriate gifts for adults. The Haftarah Commentary, edited by W. Gunther Plaut and Chaim Stern, The Torah: A Modern Commentary, also edited by Plaut, and A Torah Commentary for Our Times by Harvey J. Fields are essential to every Jewish library.

The URJ PRESS is part of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, the central body of Reform Judaism in North America, uniting 1.5 million Reform Jews in 875 synagogues. UAHC services include camps, music and book publishing, outreach to unaffiliated and intermarried Jews, educational programs, and the Religious Action Center in Washington, DC.
